CAFB History

Our doors opened on January 15th, 1980, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, immediately after significant cuts in the Food Stamp program. Thousands of churches, synagogues, mosques and other secular, non-profit organizations developed programs to try to fill the gap of this enormous governmental shift. In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, hunger had been nearly eliminated because of the Food Stamp program, but after years of eroding government assistance programs, the problem of hunger has continued to grow.  Click here for a chronology.
