Advocacy and Community Outreach

The Advocacy department works to educate the community, local elected officials and policymakers about the issues of hunger and nutrition in the Washington, D.C. The Anacostia Farmers Market
The Anacostia Farmers Market packed up its tents for the last time on November 14, 2007.
The Anacostia Farmers Market provided healthy, fresh produce to SE, D.C. for nine seasons.  Nutrition information and cooking demonstrations were regular elements of market days.

The Brown Bag Program
The Brown Bag Program provides nutritious supplemental food for low-income seniors and families on a monthly basis through agencies throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area.  This program currently serves 2000 individuals at 32 sites.  For more information, call 202-526-5344 ext. 306 or email: restivot@cfoodbank.org

Children and Nutrition Programs
Investing in the lives of children and the local community, Children and Nutrition Programs provide healthy food and nutrition education to children, teens and adults who are at risk of hunger in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Click here for more information.

Direct Distributions
Every month there is a distribution of food from the USDA Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) directly to those eligible in Arlington, Langley Park and Northeast D.C. communities.  For more information, call 202-526-5344 ext. 223 or email: peelem@cfoodbank.org

Face Hunger
Face Hunger is an interactive workshop designed to increase awareness and understanding of hunger and poverty.  This workshop is open groups, large and small who wish to increase their understanding of these issues.  For more information email gistr@cfoodbank.org or call (202)526-5344 ext. 295. 

Food for Kids
Food for Kids delivers supplemental weekend bags of food weekly to more than 1,500 children at risk of hunger.  This program is designed to help ease hunger during the days that school is out since many of the children served rely on free and reduced school breakfasts and lunches as their primary source of food.  Click here for more information.

Food for Thought
CAFB staff and volunteer Nutritionists address the issues of nutrition and health through the Food For Thought program.  Taught at Kids Cafes, Food For Thought increases awareness of how maintaining healthy eating habits and regular physical activity has a postive impact on overall health. Through lessons, activities and hands on food preparation, the kids are taught how to prepare simple snacks and meals, how to choose foods wisely, and the importance of physical fitness.  Click here for more information.

From the Ground Up
From the Ground Up is a cooperative farm project between the CAFB and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation where chemical-free produce is grown at Clagett Farm in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and distributed to underserved communities in the Washington Metro Area.  Click here for more information.

Harvest for Health/East of the River
The Harvest for Health/East of the River Initiative encompasses several projects of the Capital Area Food Bank that strive to connect Washington, DC metropolitan area residents with local sources of fresh and healthy foods. Click here for more information.

Kids Cafe
The Kids Cafe after school meal program partners with community after school and summer enrichment programs to provide free nutritious snacks and meals to more than 2,000 children and teens who may not have the opportunity to eat regularly at home. The site programs offer safe and accessible environments along with a variety of activities focusing on academic and/or social enrichment.  Click here for more information.

Operation Frontline
Operation Frontline is a national cooking-based nutrition program for low income communities.  Founded by Share Our Strength and run by the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C., Operation Frontline brings volunteer chefs, nutritionists, and health enthusiants into the community to empower people to make better food choices on a limited budget.  Operation Frontline classes take place in community sites for 4-6 weeks, and focus on teaching cooking skills, nutrition basics, and food budgeting.  Click here for more information.

Produce for People
Produce for People is a fresh food initiative created by the CAFB to collect and distribute surplus produce to people who may not otherwise have access to it.  In 2003, the CAFB distributed over 6 million pounds of fresh produce.

Sister Hook-Up
Sister Hook-Up links member agencies with local Giant and Safeway stores for direct donations of perishable food items.  For more information, call 202-526-5344 ext. 224 or email: ravenell-wardg@cfoodbank.org


Youth in Kids Cafe site programs engage in hands-on activities and lessons, along with a field trip to the Clagett Farm during the summer.  They learn the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, the origins of these foods and how to access them.  For more information, email: clagettfarm@cfoodbank.org
