“There’s something moving about making an object as simple as a bowl. It’s empty and needs to be filled,” said Toby Rivkin about her interest turned obsession – pottery.
Rivkin shares her love for pottery with students at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, MD, where she teaches. Since the start of the school year, she’s been working with a group of fifth-grade students and helping them create one-of-a-kind bowls for the Capital Area Food Bank’s Empty Bowls event on October 17 at the FHI 360 Conference Center.
“Our teachers at Roland Park are very socially aware and explain the importance of the Capital Area Food Bank’s work in the community,” said Rivkin who has generously donated ceramics to Empty Bowls for several years.
There were no shortcuts for the approximately 40 students who crafted the bowls. They shaped and glazed their pottery pieces, mixed all the chemicals and put their own personal touches on them.
The students’ beautiful artwork will be available at the annual fall event where for a suggested donation of $25, diners can purchase two of the students’ bowls. Bowls made by professional artists are $25 apiece.
