Volunteers at the Capital Area Food Bank come in all colors, sizes, personalities and even professions; and it isn’t an activity reserved for those who may have endless hours to spare. Sometimes we even have the opportunity of working alongside high-ranking U.S. officials such as Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. This past September we were honored with the presence of Secretary Solis accompanied by her staff and Director of U.S. Office of Personnel Management John Berry. Their presence undoubtedly proves that anyone can volunteer.
Secretary Solis and Director Berry assisted in packing over 100 pounds of canned vegetables into useable sizes that were distributed to many of our partner agencies. On that day their naturally infectious volunteering spirit spread to Lynn Brantley, president and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank and Mark McCaffrey, COO of the CAFB. Who couldn’t help but volunteer alongside these modern day change makers?
Without the aid of such committed volunteers like Secretary Solis and Director Berry it would be very difficult for the food bank to assist our community in need . Last year, the food bank hosted over 14,000 volunteers!
