With one week until Thanksgiving, many of us are thinking about our favorite holiday dish–whether it is creamy mac-n-cheese, flavorful oyster stuffing, that ever-present turkey, or any of the many wonderful foods that we associate with time with our family and friends. But what about the 641,000 individuals in the DC Metropolitan Area who are either at risk of or struggle with hunger on a daily basis? Will their Thanksgiving meals be filled with such bounty?
In addition to working year-round to ensure that those in need have access to nutritious food, the Capital Area Food Bank is teaming up with WHUR-FM, Giant Food and Suntrust to offer something special for the Thanksgiving holidays. Enter Food2Feed–a day-long fundraiser that takes place today, Thursday the 18th, from 6am-6pm at the Old Post Office Pavilion. Individuals can donate funds either onsite, online, or by mailing a check. All funds raised will be converted to $50 Giant gift cards, which the Capital Area Food Bank will then be distributing to those most in need this weekend. In 2009, WHUR raised $75,000, which the Capital Area Food Bank distributed to 1,500 families in the form of gift cards.
We need your help to ensure a bountiful Thanksgiving for all, so the next time thoughts of your great-aunt’s sweet potato pie drift into your head, please consider making a donation to Food2Feed!
