Congratulations are in order for Kendra Rowe Salas, the Capital Area Food Bank’s Director of Food for Kids, who has been appointed to DC Mayor Vincent Gray’s Healthy Youth and Schools Commission. Established by the Healthy Schools Act of 2010, the commission will advise the Mayor and DC Council on health, wellness, and nutritional issues affecting children and schools in the District. At Kendra’s first meeting on May 29, the new commission members reviewed the Healthy Schools Act in detail and established groups to look at specific areas of interest and submit a report by November 30 of each year. Kendra will first work with a small group focusing on the environmental aspects of the Healthy Schools Act.
Alex Ashbrook, director of DC Hunger Solutions, was appointed to serve as the commission’s chairperson. Other appointees to the commission are: Sandra Schlicker, Office of the State Superintendent of Education; Adele T. Fabrikant, DC Public Schools; Samia W. Altaf, Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services; Charneta Scott, designee of the Department of Mental Health; Dexter O. Williams, student representative; Amy L. Nakamoto; Andrea L. Northup; Alexandra C. Lewin-Zwerdling; Naomi R. DeVeaux; Cara Larson Biddle; and Jenny Backus.
