The Capital Area Food Bank never shies away from partnering with sports teams, as strong athletes need strong, nutritious diets for optimal performance.
Thus, it is with great pleasure that the food bank welcomes players from our hometown Major League Baseball team, the Washington Nationals, for an annual visit to our headquarters and warehouse at 12 pm today.
Anticipated players include outfielder Rick Ankiel and his wife, with pitcher Ross Detwiler and his fiancée. They will join food bank Founder and Executive Director Lynn Brantley joined by food bank staff and volunteers to help prepare lunch bags for the Capital Area Food Bank’s Weekend Bag program.
The Weekend Bag program provides food to 1,000 children weekly when they do not have access to school meals during summer months. A recent Feeding America survey reported that the majority of Weekend Bag student-recipients are able to focus for longer periods of time in the classroom when they are well nourished.
The visit will take place in advance of the annual Harris Teeter Food Drive, which is scheduled for the weekend series against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8. Come out and show your hometown pride!
