Meals will be provided to all children free of charge.
Washington DC, December 2020 – The Capital Area Food Bank is serving meals for children in the District of Columbia, Prince George’s County and Northern VA through the Summer Food Service Program. The state agencies that administer the program in all regions have received a waiver to continue SFSP service throughout the school year, allowing sites to take bagged meals offsite and promote social distancing.
During the school year, the Capital Area Food Bank usually operates afterschool and weekend meal programs, through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Weekend Bag. Both of these programs fill meal gaps, supplementing school based federal free or reduced price breakfasts, lunches, afterschool snacks and dinners. Meal service is extended through the summertime, with sites offering daily breakfasts, lunches, snacks and suppers through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Additionally, the CAFB’s Weekend Bag program provides bags of pantry staples and fresh produce for children and their families over the weekend when school is out of session. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CAFB is able to offer takeaway emergency meals through SFSP.
Acceptance and participation requirements for the Program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
